The Book Vault
I published my first three novels in 1995/96 and have been writing professionally ever since. Back in the days of paperback fiction, I wrote for two publishers under multiple pen names, writing up to six books per year! I had a family to support, and the writing was fun and lucrative!

Below is a collection of my past work, some still available for purchase. Some books you might find on Ebay or online used bookstores.

What you will notice is that I've never been a single-genre author. I've written fantasy, science fiction, military thrillers, medical drama, and more. Much of my work requires intense research, a skill I love to teach to students and colleagues.

The Squire Series 1995
I pitched the idea to Editor Christopher Schelling of a conscientious objector during the medieval days who serves King Arthur, and he bought the three-book series before I even wrote them. I didn't know much about the Arthurian legend (only what I'd seen in films and on TV). Thus, I spent months at the library doing research, writing outlines, and making maps to help me write these first three novels. Â

Space: Above and Beyond (TV tie-in Novels)
When I was living in Los Angeles and hustling to become a film and TV writer, I had the great fortune to meet with James Wong and Glen Morgan, producers on shows like 21 Jumpstreet and the X-Files. They created a new science fiction show for Fox, and I was hired to write the tie-in novels and work with them on the book as they produced the show. It was great fun. In 1995, I adapted their pilot into a book and then wrote an original novel in the series published in 1997. Space Above and Beyond Wiki Here.

Descent Series (Video Game Tie-in Novels)
After writing the Space: Above and Beyond books, I was asked by editor Stephen Power at Avon Books If could adapt a video game into a series of novels. They sent me the game Descent, and after playing it, I was hooked. This was the fist time I worked with a game design team and chatted with them about their story choices based on the game mechanics and limitations of the game technology. I was able to learn a lot about narrative design in games and had an amazing time turning the basic game story into a complex and hilarious series of books that serve as a fun adventure and a spoof of the genre. Also, Equinox is one of the few game-based books in existence featuring characters from the Caribbean.

Wing Commander (Film and Game Tie-in Novels)
I began as a literary novelist, was hired to write a trilogy of fantasy novels, was hired to turn a tv show into books, was hired to turn a video game into books, and then I was hired by my editors at HarperCollins to turn a beloved video game being made into a film into a novelization. Are you following? Meanwhile, the game had already been adapted into a series of well-regarded books, but my focus was the movie script adaptation. In order to be as faithful as possible to the games and previous novels, I enlisted the help of writers/fans at  The Wing Commander Combat Information Center. Ben Lesnick ("LOAF") and others guided me along, fact-checked me, and made writing the novel a wonderful experience. While the movie received mixed reviews, readers of the adult novel, junior novel, and original sequel book agreed that I remained true to the original game characters and stories. I was proud of the job I did on these, and I learned the importance of being in touch with your audience to learn what they want and expect.

Red Planet Adaptation (film starring Val Kilmer)
Mr. Tom Colgan, then senior editor at Berkley Books, was aware of my other tie-in books and asked if I'd be interested in adapting one of the two mars movies coming out in the year 2000. Tom wasn't sure from which film/studio the publishing company could license the rights, so he sent me both scripts:  Mission to Mars and Red Planet. After reading both scripts, we agreed the Red Planet was the stronger story and the novel could make it even stronger. I worked with the studio reps to receive storyboards, the latest drafts of the script, and wrote the book in six weeks so it could be published during the movie's release.Â

Brothers In Arms (Writing as Ben Weaver)
I began working for more than one publisher, and my agent and editors suggested that given the different genres and number of books I was writing, I could land even more deals if I was willing to write under pen names. It was a difficult decision, but as a working writer with a family to support, I opted to stay busy. Despite the pen name here, I truly loved writing this series, which was inspired by C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower series of novels. If you like character-driven military Sci-Fi, you should grab a kindle copy.
Night Angel 9 (Medical Drama Series)
As a huge fan of medical drama TV shows, I pitched an idea to my publisher and negotiated the right to use my own name on the books, providing I wrote another series for them under a new pen name. These were the glory days of paperback fiction (prior to Amazon self-publishing), and I had more work than I could possibly imagine. I spent countless hours riding around with my local fire department and working with public relations folks from the Los Angeles Fire Department to be factually accurate. These books were a labor of love, and I'm exceedingly proud of the exacting research that went into them.
