Immediately after 9/11, readers and editors were hungry for military fiction, and the market for those stories was hot. While I considered myself a writer of many genres, for years afterward I wrote mostly military thrillers and action adventure. Since my stepfather was in the Marine Corps, I wanted to create a series to honor him and the Corps itself. This was the first but would not be the last time I'd write about Marines. Fun fact: every time North Korea winds up in the headlines, the third book in this series increases sales.Â
Armored Corps (Writing as Pete Callahan)
After a good experience with editor Tom Colgan at Berkley Books, he reached out to ask if I'd be interested in doing a series of novels focusing on mechanized warfare. I pitched him the idea of writing about the 1-72 Armor Battalion, First Tank!, which is part of 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division and located in Dragon Valley at Camp Casey in the Republic of Korea. We envisioned a great war between North and South Korea. Dozens of Army officers helped me with the writing, most notably Mark Aitken, who has become a lifelong friend and trained me in the art and science of being a tank commander.
